Project included complete rehabilitation of a seriously deteriorated, architecturally significant historic building. A significant challenge required removal and complete rebuilding of a four-story exterior wall. Another challenge involved placement of four 80-foot steel columns into the building by lowering them through holes in the roof, through each of the three floors to footings in the sub-basement. A total of 27 tons of steel was used. Extensive temporary shoring system was required to allow for structural upgrades to occur. The Penobscot Company was awarded the 2014 AGC Build Maine Award for Historic Restoration for their work on this project.
